While in the U.S.

International students who enter the U.S. under the F or J non-immigration status are expected to maintain status by following immigration regulations. Maintaining your legal status, carrying the right documents, and knowing where to seek help in case of immigration issues can help you have a smooth experience in the U.S. and achieve your academic and professional goals.

Maintaining Status while in the U.S.

  • Maintain Full-Time Enrollment: Stay enrolled as a full-time student each quarter or apply for an exception. Be sure to follow F-1 or J-1 specific rules.
  • Keep Your I-20 or DS-2019 Valid: Ensure that your Form I-20 (for F students) or DS-2019 (for J students) does not expire. Check your Program End Date and request an extension of your I-20 or DS-2019 in MyISSS if you have not completed degree requirements.
  • Follow Work Regulations: F-1 and J-1 students must follow strict rules related to employment. Working without authorization is always a violation of your status.
  • Report Address Changes: Update your address through your MyUW portal within 10 days of moving.

Documents to Carry

While in the U.S., you are required to carry certain documents to prove your legal status and identity. ISS recommends carrying paper copies of certain documents while keeping official copies in a safe, secure location. If your original documents are lost or stolen, immediately report this to the appropriate authorities (local police, embassy/consulate, etc.) as well as the ISS.

  • Passport: Ensure your passport does not expire during your time in the U.S..
  • Visa: A visa stamp in your passport (except in cases of visa-exempt status like Canadian citizens).
  • I-94 Record: This electronic document is proof of your lawful entry and status in the U.S. You can retrieve it online from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
  • I-20 or DS-2019: Carry a recent copy of your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) at all times. You can print a copy from your MyISSS portal anytime and don’t forget to sign it on the bottom of page 1.
  • Employment Authorization Document (if applicable): If you are authorized to work, carry your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or other proof of authorization.
