If you’re an F-1 international student at the University of Washington, you typically take your annual vacation during the summer quarter. However, some students may qualify to take their vacation quarter during the winter instead. This is called an alternate vacation quarter. Here’s a guide to help you determine if an alternate vacation quarter is right for you and what steps to take.
What Is an Alternate Vacation Quarter?
An alternate vacation quarter allows eligible students to take a break from full-time enrollment during a quarter other than summer. During this quarter, you can enroll part-time or not at all, and you’re free to travel, work within F-1 guidelines, or rest and recharge.
Eligibility for Winter Vacation Quarter
- You may be eligible for a winter vacation quarter if:
- You have completed at least three consecutive full-time quarters (including summer) before your proposed vacation.
- You plan to maintain your F-1 status by resuming full-time enrollment in spring 2025.
Important: This option is not automatic. You must confirm your eligibility and get approval from the International Student Services (ISS) office.
Steps to Request an Alternate Vacation Quarter
- Review Your Eligibility: Confirm that you’ve completed three consecutive full-time quarters and that you meet all other requirements.
- Submit a Request via MyISSS: Log into your MyISSS portal and submit the Alternate Vacation Quarter request.
- Wait for Approval: ISS will review your request and notify you of their decision. Be sure to wait for official approval before making any travel or part-time enrollment plans.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Work Restrictions: If approved, you may work on campus beyond the normal limit of 20 hours per week during the winter vacation quarter. Off-campus work still requires proper authorization such as CPT.
- Travel Considerations: If you plan to travel outside the U.S., ensure that your I-20 is signed for travel and that your visa and passport are valid.
- Academic Planning: Taking a winter vacation quarter might affect your academic plan, so consult with your academic advisor to ensure you stay on track.
