About SEVIS

Understanding SEVIS and Your Responsibilities as an International Student

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a U.S. government database that facilitates the exchange of information between schools and federal immigration agencies regarding the status of international students. It electronically records key details throughout your F-1 or J-1 academic career in the U.S.

After confirming your enrollment at the UW, your admission unit creates a SEVIS immigration record. This record enables UW to issue the I-20 or DS-2019 forms, essential for obtaining F-1 or J-1 status. When applying for a visa or arriving at a U.S. port of entry, immigration officials may consult your SEVIS record along with your supporting documents to verify your eligibility for these statuses. Throughout your time at UW, International Student Services (ISS) will update your record with information such as your enrollment status, address updates, academic program changes, degree completion, etc.

The SEVIS system is partially funded by the I-901 fee you pay to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

SEVIS Registration or Validation

  • F-1 Students: Designated School Officials (DSOs) must confirm eligibility and register immigration records quarterly.
  • J-1 Students: SEVIS validation occurs within 30 days of starting your program and is required only once.

To complete registration or validation, the following are required:

  • I-901 SEVIS fee payment
  • U.S. physical address
  • Full-time enrollment
  • Contact phone number (J-1 students must provide one)

Deadlines and Legal Requirements

The government requires ISS to register your record within 30 days of the start of each quarter. Failure to update your record can result in the automatic closure of your record, which may render you without status in the U.S.

Maintaining Your SEVIS Record

The ISS Office manages compliance for UW and relies on accurate contact information. Thus, you must keep your email, phone number, and address updated in MyUW to ensure we can reach you in urgent situations affecting your immigration status.

Understanding and adhering to F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations is crucial to maintaining your status in the U.S. For any questions or assistance, contact ISS.
