Alert! Fake Embassy and Police Scam

A sophisticated phone scam involving individuals who falsely claim to represent the Chinese Embassy or police authorities continues to target international students. While this scam is not new, it continues to evolve and exploit fears about immigration, legal trouble, and international travel. Awareness is key to staying safe.

What Happens:

  • You get a call from someone claiming to be from the Chinese Embassy or police in China.
  • They claim that you are under investigation for a crime.
  • They pressure you with fake police videos, long video calls, and threats.
  • They may ask you to send money (sometimes large amounts) to solve the issue or make bail.
  • They may keep you under video watch.

Warning Signs:

  • Calls claiming you’re in legal trouble in your home country or the U.S.
  • Being told not to tell anyone or stay on video for hours.
  • Being told someone is surveilling you, your phone, etc.
  • Requests for money or personal information.

What to Do:

  • Do NOT send money or personal info.
  • Hang up immediately.
  • Report it to International Student Services and campus police.

Staying informed is your best defense against scams. Remember, government officials will never ask you for money. If you ever feel unsure about a call, message, or request for money, contact ISS for help.
