Reminders and Tips for Registering for Classes

As we kick off the quarter, it’s important to stay on top of class registration to ensure you’re meeting visa requirements and academic goals. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the process smoothly!

Full-Time Enrollment

F-1 and J-1 students are required to enroll in full-time coursework each quarter:

  • 12 credits for undergraduates
  • 10 credits for graduate students

Be sure you’re registered for the correct number of credits by September 25th. Maintaining full-time status is critical for your immigration status. If you’re not registered correctly, it could affect your ability to stay in the U.S.

Online Class Limitations

If you’re taking online courses, keep in mind that F-1 and J-1 students can count only one online class  toward full-time enrollment. Hybrid courses are considered in-person, so there’s no need to worry about those classes. Remember: you can never be enrolled in only online course work. Make sure you’re balancing your course load accordingly.

Exceptions to Full-Time Enrollment

In some cases, international students may be eligible for a reduced course load. This includes:

To apply for a reduced course load, you’ll need approval from your International Student Services, and the process may require some documentation. If you think you qualify, submit a request through your MyISSS portal.

Key Dates for Adding Classes

  • October 2nd: After this date, you’ll need an add code from your professor to enroll in any class. Don’t wait too long—reach out to your professors in advance to request the code if you’re thinking about adding or switching courses. The longer we get into the quarter, the harder it may be to add a class.
  • October 8th: This is the ISS deadline to register for full-time coursework. Once this date passes, ISS will place a hold on your school record. If you are not able to meet full-time requirements, your immigration status may end up terminated.

Refer to the Office of the University Registrar academic calendar for additional important dates.

Plan Ahead: Reach Out for Guidance

If you’re unsure about which classes to take or how to fulfill your academic requirements, don’t hesitate to reach out to your academic advisor or your department. They can guide you in choosing the right courses. If you anticipate having problems meeting enrollment requirements, feel free to reach out to ISS either via email or by meeting with an advisor.
