Employment is defined as “work performed in exchange for compensation.” Compensation can include money, room and board, or other significant benefits. Most employment opportunities require authorization. Working without authorization has serious consequences and can impact your ability to study, travel, or work in the U.S. throughout your life.
CPT
CPT is a work authorization for different types of activities related to your major.
International Organizations
As an F-1 student, you may work for a qualified international organization, as defined by the International Organization Immunities Act of 1945.
On-campus Employment
Students with F-1 visas are eligible to work on their home campuses while studying in the U.S.
Pre-completion
OPT
Pre-Completion OPT might be considered for off-campus work if you are not eligible for CPT.
Post-completion
OPT
Post-completion OPT is a 1-year work authorization granted after graduation.
Severe Economic Hardship
If you are suffering economic hardship due to unforeseen circumstances, you may apply for authorization to work off-campus.
