Winter Travel Tips for International Students

As winter break approaches, many of you may be preparing to travel home or explore new destinations. Whether you’re embarking on an adventure or heading back to spend time with family or friends, here are some key reminders and tips to ensure a smooth journey and a seamless return to the University of Washington.

Prepare for Re-Entry to the U.S.

To return for the start of the winter quarter on January 6, make sure you have the following items in order:

  • Valid Passport and Visa: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months into the future and that your visa is not expired.
  • I-20 or DS-2019 with Travel Signature: Check that your I-20 or DS-2019 has a valid travel signature, signed within the last 12 months (or six months for OPT students). You can request a new travel signature through the MyISSS portal.
  • Class Schedule: Keep a copy of your winter class schedule handy in case it’s requested at the Port of Entry.
  • Contact Information: Save contact details for the ISS office in case you need assistance. If you have trouble at the Port of Entry, you can request the border official contact ISS directly.

Navigating Travel Anxiety and Potential Policy Changes

We’ve heard from some students and departments concerns about the incoming government administration. However, since UW’s winter quarter begins January 6 and the new administration will not take office until January 20, you should not experience any issues traveling back to the U.S. There will be no changes to immigration policy before UW’s winter quarter begins.

We understand that changes in government can sometimes bring uncertainty for international students. The UW is committed to supporting and advocating for international students enrolled at the UW. The ISS team closely monitors F-1 and J-1 immigration policies and will keep you informed of any developments that may impact your student status.

Here’s what you can do to ease any concerns:

  • Stay Informed: Rely on updates directly from ISS and official government resources, avoiding unverified news or rumors.
  • Reach Out for Help: If you have questions or worries, don’t hesitate to contact our team. We’re here to help guide you through any challenges.

While You’re Away

Take this time to relax, connect with friends and family, and recharge for the winter quarter. But don’t forget to check your UW email periodically for important updates or reminders about the upcoming term.

If you are planning to be outside the U.S. for winter quarter, be sure to stay in touch with ISS and check our Government Updates page to stay up to date on any changes before your return to the U.S.

Safe travels and enjoy your winter break!
