International Student Services has become aware of a recent phone scam targeting international students about their “alien registration number.”
In a recent incident, a student received a call from someone claiming to be with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The caller stated that the student was required to report their Alien Registration Number to USCIS, warned that failure to do so would be a federal crime, and claimed there was an active arrest warrant for the student. The caller then threatened the student stating that the police were on their way.
This is not a legitimate government communication. While there have been reports of federal agencies calling students to request appointments, they do not make unsolicited calls demanding immigration information in this way.
If you receive a similar call, do not share personal or immigration information. Request the name and agent number of the individual. You may also consider documenting the number that called you in case you wish to report it later. With this information, reach out to International Student Services, and we can verify whether a request is legitimate.
If you are ever unsure about a communication related to your immigration status or reporting requirements, please contact ISS before taking any action. We are here to help you verify information and keep you safe from scams.
