Reporting Incidents as a J-1 Student

As a J-1 student at the University of Washington, your well-being and success are our top priorities. While your time here may be exciting, unexpected challenges can sometimes arise. If they do, it’s important to let the International Student Services (ISS) team know so we can help.

Reporting Incidents

As part of our role as a J-1 program sponsor, UW is required to notify the U.S. Department of State about certain situations involving J-1 students. This includes things like:

  • A serious illness, injury, or hospitalization
  • Incidents involving the criminal justice system
  • Sexually-related incidents or abuse
  • Lost or stolen immigration documents
  • Incidents involving child protective services
  • Fraud (e.g., visa, immigration, or financial fraud or scam)
  • Unsuitable host/work conditions (e.g., incident or allegation involving workplace bullying, harassment, discrimination, hostile work environment, or work hours and/or wage-related issues)
  • Any significant events that may affect your ability to focus on your studies
  • By sharing this information with ISS, you’re helping us ensure that you have the support and resources you need to stay safe, healthy, and on track with your academic goals.

How Reporting Helps You

  • Connecting You to Support
We can connect you with resources like medical care, counseling, or other campus services to help you through any challenges.
  • Protecting Your Visa Status
Our team makes sure all required reporting is completed correctly, which helps you maintain your J-1 visa status.
