As you get ready to return to the UW for the 2025-2026 academic year, here are a few important reminders to help you stay on track with your immigration and have another successful year.
1. Prepare Your Documents for Entry
When you travel back to the U.S., make sure you carry (not pack in checked luggage) the documents you’ll need to show at the port of entry:
- A valid passport (valid for at least six months beyond your entry date)
- Your F-1 or J-1 visa (unless you’re Canadian and don’t need a visa)
- Your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) form issued by UW with a travel signature no older than 1 year
- Your class schedule
- Proof of financial support (such as bank statements or a scholarship letter)
Keep these documents in your carry-on bag as you might need them when you speak with the Customs and Border Protection officer.
2. Remember Class Schedule Add/Drop Deadlines
Before the start of the quarter, make sure you’re enrolled full-time (12 hours for undergraduates and 10 hours for graduate students). It’s common to make changes to your class schedule during the first few days of the quarter. However, you should keep in mind the following as you do so:
- You can add or drop classes freely through the first week of the quarter.
- Beginning October 1st, you’ll need an add code from the instructor or department to register for additional classes. Please do not drop below full-time until you are confident you can get an add code to replace a course.
- International Student Services requires all F and J international students to be registered full-time by October 7th. After this date, a hold will be placed on your MyUW record.
Make sure to review the quarterly deadlines on the UW Registrar’s website so you can plan your schedule without issues.
3. Stay Engaged Through UW CIRCLE Events
The Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange (CIRCLE) offers events, workshops, and social gatherings throughout the year to help international students connect and thrive. From cultural celebrations to leadership opportunities, CIRCLE is a great way to stay involved and build community on campus.
4. Plan Ahead if You’re Graduating in Autumn 2025
If you plan to graduate at the end of Autumn quarter, now is the time to learn about post-graduation options. F-1 students can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), and J-1 students may be eligible for Academic Training. Both require advance planning, so review the requirements early and attend ISS workshops for guidance. Whether you intend to stay in the U.S. and work or not, we encourage you to read through our F-1 student and J-1 student Final Quarter and Graduation Planning information.
5. Use ISS Services for Support
As always, International Student Services (ISS) is here to help you navigate your immigration obligations through advising and other resources. We provide you support through a variety of services including the following:
- Email us directly
- Meet with an advisor
- Information sessions covering immigration topics
- Live online chat
