Food insecurity is a real issue that affects students at the University of Washington. The UW Food Pantry is a campus resource that provides free food and groceries to students, staff, and faculty.
What the UW Food Pantry Is
The UW Food Pantry is a campus resource that provides shelf stable products, UW Farm organic produce, ready-to-eat items from campus dining locations, and hygiene products at no cost to members of the UW campus community. Its mission is to ensure everyone at UW has access to nutritious food while fostering a welcoming and stigma-free environment. The pantry offers a variety of items, including shelf-stable groceries, culturally appropriate foods, and options that meet different dietary needs like halal, vegetarian, and gluten-free.
The pantry also emphasizes equitable distribution by using a points system, setting limits on items, and offering consistent access each week. This helps make sure food is available to everyone who needs it.
What to Expect on Your Visit
The UW Food Pantry is located in Poplar Hall, 210. You can enter through the north side of the building at Brooklyn and 41st. Visiting the pantry is simple and designed to be stress-free. Students can visit once per week, using a points system to select items. Most visitors receive 8 points per visit, while parents and caretakers receive 13 points. Each item is labeled with its point value and limits. For example, a 1-lb bag of oats is 1 point, and visitors can take up to 2 bags per visit. Points reset every weekend, giving you a fresh set each week.
Shopping is self-guided with baskets and other resources near the front door, and volunteers are ready to help if needed. When you’re done, you check out, and the pantry keeps track of food weight and points. To access the pantry, all you need is your Husky ID.
Making the Pantry Accessible and Welcoming
The UW Food Pantry works hard to create a comfortable space for everyone. They use a shopping model where visitors can pick the food they want, train volunteers to use welcoming, trauma-informed language, and keep access simple with only a Husky ID required.
International students who may feel hesitant should know that everyone is welcome. Staff at the front door can answer questions, and the pantry team is happy to accommodate specific needs to make your visit easier.
Food Options and Community Support
The pantry strives to provide culturally diverse options, including halal, vegetarian, and gluten-free foods. With rising community needs, the team is exploring ways to expand variety.
For students experiencing ongoing food insecurity, additional support is available through UW Livewell, which connects students to long-term programs, and the UDistrict Food Bank nearby.
Why It Matters
Food insecurity among students has been increasing. In 2019, an estimated 1 in 5 UW students experienced food insecurity. Visitor numbers at the pantry reflect this trend with 6,000 visitors in 2020 grew to nearly 25,000 in 2025, and around 700 unique visitors per week in Fall Quarter 2025. Resources like the UW Food Pantry make a real difference for students navigating these challenges.
