University of Washington (UW) Federal Tax Clinic comprises over 20 volunteer student attorneys, 15 volunteer attorneys, and three experienced directors and professors. The Clinic offers free representation of low-income Western Washington clients, including international students, at all levels of the IRS for ongoing tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In 2023, the Clinic reduced tax liabilities, penalties, and interest by $4,159,508.
As an international student, you must file a U.S. Tax Return if you have a taxable scholarship or fellowship grant or have earned any income in the United States even if it is as little as $1. On February 27th, at 5:30 pm, UW Federal Tax Clinic will host a U.S. tax workshop to help international students navigate the U.S. federal tax system and be ready to file taxes with Glacier Tax Prep, a tax preparation software provided by UW International Student Services and expected to go live in late February 2025.
The Tax Clinic is open Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm and offers free consultations on federal tax-related issues and questions for international students. You may contact the Clinic through email at litc@uw.edu or speak to a volunteer student attorney at 206-685-6805. For more information on how to become a client for a tax dispute, visit our website.
