Campus Spotlight: Career and Internship Center

Author: Sirinya Hirunviriya

Landing an internship or job as an international student can feel like navigating uncharted territory. With unfamiliar systems, cultural differences, and the pressure to succeed, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Many of us come to the University of Washington (UW) with dreams of gaining professional experience and making the most of our study abroad journey. But juggling academics, applications, and adapting to a new environment can be challenging.

The Career and Internship Center

That’s where the Career and Internship Center (CIC) becomes an invaluable partner. CIC offers a range of services tailored to support international students, including personalized drop-in coaching sessions and one-on-one appointments with career advisors. These sessions provide expert guidance on crafting resumes, writing cover letters, preparing for interviews, and navigating the unique challenges of being an international student in a competitive job market.

Networking is another key focus of CIC, and their career fairs are the perfect opportunity to connect directly with employers. These events allow students to meet recruiters, learn about job opportunities, and gain insight into various industries.

Work Authorization

Remember, F-1 and J-1 international students must have work authorization for internships and to work post-graduation. F-1 students usually need CPT or OPT, and J-1 students require Academic Training, both approved before starting work. Check with ISS early to ensure eligibility and maintain your visa status.
