Changed Your Major? Read About Your Updated I-20

If you’ve changed your major effective Autumn 2024, here’s what you need to know about getting your updated I-20:

What do I need to do to get an updated I-20?

No worries—ISS will do all the work!   You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll automatically issue updated I-20s for any major changes. Remember, your updated I-20 will include a new travel signature valid for one year.

How long will it take to receive my new I-20?

Because of the high number of updates this quarter, it could take up to several weeks after the quarter starts for all documents to be processed. Our goal is to have all new major updates processed by Week 7 of the quarter. We’re working as quickly as possible to get them done.

I’m currently home for the summer. Do I need my updated I-20 before returning to Seattle?

Until we issue your new major I-20, you can continue to use your current I-20 for travel. You can access your most recent I-20 in your MyISSS portal under the “3 Requests and Documents” tab.

How will I know when my new I-20 is ready?

You’ll get an email from ISS at your UW email account once your updated I-20 is uploaded to your MyISSS portal. Just log in, go to the “3 Requests and Documents” tab, and you’ll find it there.

What if my major change is still pending?

If your new major isn’t official yet with the university, a new I-20 won’t be issued until it is.

I added a minor. Will I get a new I-20?

Minors don’t appear on the I-20, so if you’ve recently added or changed a minor, you won’t receive a new document.

If you have any questions or need more info you can read about major updates on our website or reach out to us. Thanks for your patience and understanding!
