5 Things to Know as a New International Student

Starting your journey at the University of Washington as a new international student is exciting, but we know it can also feel overwhelming, especially if you’re moving to the U.S. for the first time. To help you prepare, here are five important things every new F or J international student should know as they begin their studies at the UW.

1. Prepare Your Documents for Entry

When you travel to the U.S., make sure you carry (not pack in checked luggage) the documents you’ll need to show at the port of entry:

  • A valid passport (valid for at least six months beyond your entry date)
  • Your F-1 or J-1 visa (unless you’re Canadian and don’t need a visa)
  • Your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) form issued by UW
  • The admission letter from UW or class schedule
  • Proof of financial support (such as bank statements or a scholarship letter)

Keep these documents in your carry-on bag as you might need them when you speak with the Customs and Border Protection officer.

2. Complete Immigration Check-in

All F-1 and J-1 students must complete an Immigration Check-in with International Student Services (ISS). This process confirms your arrival and activates your immigration record as an international student in the United States. To complete Check-in, you’ll need to:

  • Obtain your electronic I-94 record (issued a few days after you enter the U.S.)
  • Update your contact information in MyUW (your local U.S. address and phone number)
  • Be enrolled full-time for the quarter (at least 12 credits for undergraduates, 10 credits for graduates)
  • Submit the Immigration Check-in form and documents to ISS through MyISSS

It’s important to complete Check-in before the deadline, or your immigration record could be at risk. For assistance, read through our F-1 student and J-1 student webpages on this topic.

3. Join UW CIRCLE’s International Welcome Programs

Adjusting to life in a new country is easier when you have a community. The Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange (CIRCLE) offers International Welcome Programs designed specifically for new international students. These events give you a chance to meet other students, learn about campus resources, and get practical advice about life in Seattle. We highly encourage you to attend. It’s a great way to start building your network at UW!

4. Understand Class Schedule Add/Drop Deadlines

It’s important to know the academic calendar and deadlines for adjusting your class schedule. At UW:

  • You can add or drop classes freely through the first week of the quarter.
  • Beginning October 1st, you’ll need an add code from the instructor or department to register for additional classes. Please do not drop below full-time until you are confident you can get an add code to replace a course.
  • International Student Services requires all F and J international students to be registered full-time by October 7th. After this date, a hold will be placed on your MyUW record.

Make sure to review the quarterly deadlines on the UW Registrar’s website so you can plan your schedule without issues.

5. Use ISS Services for Support

International Student Services (ISS) is here to help you throughout your time at UW. ISS provides advising and resources on maintaining F-1 or J-1 immigration status and work authorization options like CPT, OPT, and Academic Training. We provide you support through a variety of services including the following:
