Special Announcement: Amazon Hiring Delays

We’ve received the following message about students recently hired by Amazon.

“As a part of our annual operating planning review, we look at each part of our business and make adjustments as needed. In this macro-economic environment, it’s more important than ever for our company to be thoughtful with our business decisions. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to delay the start date of select full-time candidates from various universities, including those who are currently students at UW. We recognize this delay may create challenges for your students so we are also offering a one-time payment to address the financial impact of this decision. The Student Programs team is calling each impacted candidate to inform them of this change. Please note not all start dates will be changed. We plan to email candidates that are not impacted to inform them their start dates remain unchanged. We truly value the relationship with UW and hope you know this was not an easy decision for us to make.”

Please note: this may impact our international students.

Students with J-1 visas with Academic Training: No unemployment is possible while you have approved Academic Training.

Students with F-1 visas with Curricular Practical Training: Please consult with your academic advisor. You may want to submit a CPT Update Form to cancel current CPT authorizations. You will need to change your course schedule to ensure you get into the right CPT course. You will also need to submit a new CPT request with the right dates once you are in your new class.

Students with F-1 visas with Optional Practical Training: You will need to update your employment information in the SEVP Portal. If your job at Amazon has been delayed for 6 months, you are encouraged to find a new job as 6 months of unemployment will not allow you to maintain F-1 status. You only have 90 days of unemployment total while on regular post-completion OPT.

Students with F-1 visas with STEM OPT: You are encouraged to seek new employment that will allow you to maintain your F-1 status. Six months of unemployment will max our your allowed days of unemployment.
