International Student Services (ISS) looks forward to welcoming you to campus! As you prepare for your journey, please review the following information to help ensure a smooth arrival and immigration check-in.
Immigration Check-in Webinars
After arriving, you must complete your F-1 immigration check-in through MyISSS. Review the F-1 Immigration Check-in instructions so you understand the steps you must complete after arrival.
ISS will host two webinars explaining the immigration check-in process:
The Immigration Check-in becomes available in MyISSS on August 22, 2026.
Deadline: submit your Immigration Check-in by September 30, 2026.
Preparing for a successful arrival
The earliest date you may enter the United States is 30 days prior to the Program Start Date listed on your I-20. Do not attempt to enter before this date. Keep this in mind when planning your trip to the U.S.
If you're entering by land, ferry, or train you should apply for your I-94 a week prior to your anticipated entry date. Those entering the U.S. by plane do not need to apply for the I-94 beforehand and instead will be issued one at the point of entry.
When traveling, carry your immigration documents with you rather than placing them in checked luggage. Be prepared to present the required documentation at the port of entry.
You must be registered full-time before ISS can process your immigration check-in. For undergraduate students, this is 12 credits. We strongly recommend enrolling in classes by September 30.
Beginning October 7, you will need an add code from the course professor or academic program to enroll in a class. Add codes can be difficult to get, so enroll early.
On-campus Employment & Social Security Numbers
F-1 students may begin eligible on-campus employment after arriving in the United States, but no earlier than 30 days before classes begin. You can search for available positions through UW Handshake.
If you receive an on-campus job offer and need a Social Security number (SSN), you first complete your F-1 Immigration Check-in. After that is processed, you can submit an SSN Letter request to ISS.
We are excited to welcome you to UW and wish you a safe and successful journey!
