August 06, 2026
Dear reader,

The U.S. government has published new regulations that will significantly affect F-1 and J-1 international students. Beginning September 15, 2026, the regulations will replace Duration of Status (D/S) with fixed periods of admission and introduce new restrictions on academic changes, including changes to majors, programs, degree levels, and schools.

International Student Services (ISS) will host six virtual information sessions for incoming and current UW Seattle students. Each session will cover the same information, so you need to attend only one:

  • Friday, August 7, 9:00–10:30 a.m.
  • Friday, August 7, 3:00–4:30 p.m.
  • Monday, August 10, 8:30–10:00 a.m.
  • Wednesday, August 12, 3:00–4:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 20, 9:00–10:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, August 25, 4:00–5:30 p.m.
All times are Pacific Time. Select a session and access its Zoom link on the ISS Duration of Status Hub.

We strongly encourage all F-1 and J-1 students who will attend classes in autumn 2026 to participate. Please continue monitoring your UW email and the Duration of Status Hub for updates.

Sincerely,
International Student Services
University of Washington
