We are about a month into the summer quarter, and we want to keep you informed of two important immigration matters.
|
First, the U.S. government has published a final rule establishing a fixed period of admission for international students. The rule will significantly affect many aspects of F-1 and J-1 immigration status, but it does not take effect until September 15, 2026. ISS is reviewing the changes and will provide additional information and guidance before the effective date. No action is required by you at this time. Also, if you completed your program in spring 2026 and plan to apply for post-completion OPT, the application deadline is approaching. Submit your OPT I-20 request to ISS no later than July 22, 2026. USCIS must receive your OPT application by August 11, 2026. Apply as soon as possible to allow time for ISS processing and any necessary corrections.

ISS Update on Changes to Duration of Status
|
On July 17, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published to the Federal Register the final rule that will eliminate Duration of Status (D/S) for F-1 and J-1 students and replace it with a fixed admit until date (AUD) upon admission to the U.S.

The final rule does not take effect until September 15, 2026.

We understand this change creates uncertainty and raises many questions about how this new rule will impact our F-1 and J-1 international student community. We do not have answers yet, but we are actively collaborating with immigration experts and national organizations across the country to review and understand exactly what the new policy changes mean, the timeline, and any immediate impacts.
