Filing Taxes as an International Student
At the start of each year, you must file an income tax return for the previous calendar year to ensure the correct amount of taxes was withheld. If too much was withheld, you could receive a refund. If too little was withheld, you’ll need to pay the remaining balance to the IRS. Every international student (F and J status) has an obligation to file taxes once per year even if you have no income to report.
ISS and the UW Law Federal Tax Clinic will host a workshop to help students understanding your obligations and how to file taxes.

USCIS Increases Premium Processing Fees
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an increase to USCIS premium processing fees, including fees that affect F-1 and J-1 students and their dependents. These changes reflect inflation from June 2023 through June 2025 and are authorized under the USCIS Stabilization Act, which allows fee adjustments every two years.
