As you prepare to begin your studies at the University of Washington, now is the time to plan for your visa appointment and entry into the United States. The information below outlines several important steps to help you prepare.
|
To apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa, you will need your UW immigration document: Form I-20 for F-1 students or Form DS-2019 for J-1 students. If you have not yet requested your document, follow the instructions provided by your admissions office to submit your request through MyISSS.
|
Before your visa appointment, you must also pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Keep a copy of your payment confirmation and review the website of the U.S. embassy or consulate where you will apply for a complete list of required documents.

Visa appointment availability varies by location and may change frequently. New appointments can become available at any time, so check the scheduling system regularly. UW begins autumn quarter later than many U.S. universities, and visa appointments will likely become more available later in the summer as processing for schools with earlier start dates slows.

Entering the United States
|
The earliest date you may enter the United States is 30 days prior to the start date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019. Do not attempt to enter before this date. Keep this in mind when planning your trip to the U.S.

When traveling, carry your immigration documents with you rather than placing them in checked luggage. Be prepared to present the following at the U.S. port of entry:

- A valid passport
- A valid F-1 or J-1 visa
- Your UW-issued I-20 or DS-2019
- Your I-901 SEVIS fee payment confirmation
We also recommend carrying your UW admission letter and class schedule if possible.

Planning for a Late Arrival
|
You should plan to arrive no later than the start of classes. As the start of classes gets nearer, if you do not expect to arrive on time be sure to inform your academic program (graduate students) and ISS so that we can provide you guidance. A late arrival can affect your ability to begin your program, enroll in classes, and maintain your immigration status. If you no longer plan to attend UW, please reach out to your admissions unit at intladm@uw.edu (undergraduate students) and uwgrad@uw.edu (graduate students).

After arriving in the United States, you will be required to complete an online Immigration Check-in with ISS. We will provide more information about this at a future date.
