Autumn quarter is almost here, and we’re looking forward to welcoming you back to campus! A lot has happened over the summer, and we know many of you have questions about what these changes mean for you. New duration of status (D/S) changes take effect on September 15. In addition, recent government clarification of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) policies has led to a pause in approvals for optional CPT requests.

If you’re returning from abroad, please make sure you have all the required documents for reentry. Students returning on or after September 15 will be issued an Admit Until Date (AUD) of no more than four years. Our AUD Estimator can help you understand what this means for your studies.

New Duration of Status/AUD Rule to Take Effect
On September 15, 2026 the new DHS rule eliminating the Duration of Status policy will take effect. Students who enter the U.S. on or after this date will be admitted to the U.S. for a fixed period of time (known as your AUD) not to exceed 4 years. This does not mean that you must complete your studies by this date. However, if you need more time, you may need to either apply for an Extension of Stay or exit and re-enter the U.S.

Updates to UW Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Policies
As previously reported, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued a Broadcast Message on August 24, 2026 that provided all Designated School Officials (DSOs) with guidance regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and clarified their earlier CPT guidance sent to DSOs on August 12.

After consultation with UW leadership as well as the Attorney General’s office, International Student Services (ISS) will continue to pause CPT approvals that are not required for all students participating in an established curriculum in the student’s primary program of study
