We are contacting J-1 students whose current DS-2019 Program End Date falls within Spring 2026, Summer 2026, Autumn 2026, or Winter 2027.

As you may recall from our update last September, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has proposed changes related to Duration of Status (D/S) for F-1 and J-1 students. While these regulatory changes have not been finalized, we are reaching out to students with an DS-2019 Program End Date over the next few quarters and encourage you to carefully review your academic plans.

If you believe additional time beyond your current Program End Date may be needed to complete your degree requirements, we strongly encourage you to discuss your degree plans with your academic adviser and then submit a DS-2019 extension request in MyISSS. Submitting the extension request as early as possible will allow us to process your request before any possible regulatory changes create additional challenges or delays with processing timelines.

Examples of situations where an extension may be appropriate include:

- Delays due to changing majors
- Adding a second major
- Research or thesis delays
- Academic difficulties
- Reduced course load history affecting degree progress
- Other unexpected delays in completing degree requirements
- DS-2019 extensions must be requested before your current Program End Date expires.
- Extensions are not automatic and require academic department confirmation.
- You should only request an extension if you genuinely need more time to complete your program requirements.

Likewise, if you are graduating soon and plan to apply for Academic Training, we encourage you to submit your request to ISS as soon as possible.
