On June 4, 2025, the U.S. government issued a Presidential Proclamation that restricts entry into the United States for nationals from certain countries. This policy takes effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on June 9 (9:01 p.m. Seattle time on June 8). Based on current information, these restrictions should not impact F-1 or J-1 students who are already in the U.S. or who hold valid visas on the effective date.

We understand that this news may feel unsettling, especially as the academic year wraps up. We’re working closely with UW leadership and partners to monitor the situation. ISS is here to help you navigate these developments and support you with immigration guidance and resources. We will continue posting updates on our Government Updates page.

UW Student Defense Fund
|
The UW Student Defense Fund was established on April 23, 2025 by a concerned group of faculty, in collaboration with the UW Rapid Response Network and the WA Immigrant Solidarity Network. This fund is intended to pay for the legal fees of non-citizen students on UW campuses who are impacted by visa revocations or other sudden losses of legal status. After filling out this form, you will receive an email notification that it has been received. Your information will be kept confidential and deleted as soon as it is no longer needed for the dispersal of funds.

Planning for Summer
If you are considering international travel this summer, it is important to know there have been no policy changes to travel rules for F-1 and J-1 students. However, there is always risk with international travel. We recommend you assess your individual situation carefully before finalizing any travel plans. Review the ISS information about Travel Outside the U.S. to understand travel and document requirements, visa processing information, and the possible delays or challenges you could encounter upon re-entry to the U.S.
