With the end of daylight saving time and the coming of winter, the days are getting shorter and darker. We know Seattle winters can feel long and gray, so remember that the UW Counseling Center offers support for managing your emotional health, including various workshops as well as sessions focused on seasonal affective challenges. The Counseling Center also facilitates Paws 4 a Break where you can take a mid-day break, relax, and recharge with some furry friends.

As we move into the holiday season, many of you may be planning to travel outside the U.S. If so, please make sure you have a valid travel signature and all required documents before you go. Check your I-20 or DS-2019 now to confirm your signature is up to date, and contact ISS if you need a new one.

Finally, please be aware that we’ve seen a recent increase in scams targeting international students. Scammers often pretend to be government or university officials and may pressure you to share personal information or send money. If you receive a suspicious call or message, do not respond. Report it immediately to ISS and UWPD.

Protect Yourself from Scams Targeting International Students
International Student Services (ISS) has recently seen an increase in scams targeting F and J international students. These scams can be very convincing, and scammers often pretend to be government officials, immigration officers, or even University of Washington employees. They may claim that your visa will be canceled or that you’re in trouble with the law unless you pay immediately or share personal information.

Applying for an SSN
If you’re an F-1 or J-1 international student, you may need to apply for a Social Security number (SSN) while studying in the U.S. This number is used by the U.S. government to track your earnings over your lifetime.

The Shih Loan for international students at UW is now open for the 2025-26 academic year, offering up to $15,000 with favorable repayment terms to help finance educational goals.
