Welcome to the third week of the quarter, F-1 and J-1 students! We hope you’re settling into your classes, finding your rhythm, and making connections on campus. As you get into your autumn routine, here are a few reminders to help you stay on track.
|
Check your enrollment by October 13. By this date, you should be registered full-time. Remember that only one online course may count toward your full-time enrollment requirement. Take a moment to review your schedule, and connect with ISS if you have questions about your enrollment.

Starting an on-campus job this autumn? Working on campus can be a great way to meet people, build skills, and get involved in university life. If you’re a J-1 student, remember that you must report your on-campus employment through MyISSS. If this is your first time working in the U.S., you probably need a Social Security number (SSN). Check out our blog post about Social Security Numbers and the process of applying.

Stay connected with ISS. Whether you have a quick question or need help navigating a new situation, our team is here for you. Our doors are open Monday through Friday, 10 AM–4 PM, and all advising is drop-in. Scheduled appointments are not offered. You can also reach us by email or connect with our team through live chat. We look forward to supporting you throughout the quarter!

DHS Proposes New OPT Fees
On October 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a proposed rule, Optional Practical Training Fees, that would require a $70,000 fee for an F-1 student’s initial OPT period and $30,000 for subsequent OPT periods, including STEM OPT extensions. OPT provides eligible F-1 students with temporary employment authorization related to their field of study.
