Travel Planning, Information, and Warnings

As you know, travel restrictions and travel options continue to change daily.

Before you make any travel decisions, whether to leave the U.S. or return to the U.S., please review the following:

  • Monitor the news for the most current updates on travel.
  • Review our COVID-19 FAQs.
  • Check travel restrictions for the country you plan to travel to/from for up-to-date information, including possible quarantine recommendations.
  • Review airline information if you already have purchased tickets.
  • Consider how travel could potentially affect study for an upcoming quarter.
  • Returning to the U.S.? Ensure you have the necessary documents for reentry.
  • If you need an updated travel signature, review our Travel Signature information and complete the online request form. Allow 10 business days for processing.
  • If you are graduating but not applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT), you have a 60-day grace period after the last day of your final quarter. The grace period is meant for travel within the states and preparation to depart the U.S. You will not be eligible to reenter the U.S. with your UW I-20 once you graduate.
  • Applying for Optional Practical Training? Travel rules depend on your USCIS OPT application status and your job offer status. Be sure to carefully review the Travel and OPT rules.
