WARNING: SCAM TARGETING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

WHAT IS HAPPENING?
A UW student received a cellular phone call from an impersonator who claimed he was
a Police Officer with the Hong Kong Police. The student was threatened to be jailed if
she did not send money via a bank transfer to a Chinese bank account provided by the
impersonator. She was also told that the case was a “National Secret” and if she told
anyone she would be imprisoned for 7 to 10 years.

WHY AM I BEING ALERTED?
We at the UW Police want you to be safe and do not want this happening to you!

POLICE WILL NEVER DEMAND MONEY

WHAT STEPS DO I TAKE?
  • HANG UP; stop talking with the person asking you for money
  • DO NOT SEND MONEY or gift card information to strangers
  • TELL someone you trust
  • REPORT it to the UW Police on campus
  • ALERT your Consulate or Embassy and your family
