We want to hear from you! Complete our survey!

The International Leadership Team at ISS wants to hear from you! Please fill out our survey! Your feedback may impact our advising schedule and services for winter and spring quarters in 2023. The survey is open now through December 16, 2022.
Thank you, in advance, for helping us assess how we are serving you!

Traveling and Grace Period

Many students like to travel between autumn and winter quarters and we want to make sure you're ready for what's ahead! Check out these travel tips as you plan for your journey.
  • Check your DS-2019 end date.
    • If your DS-2019 ends 12/16/2022, you have a 30-day grace period. If you leave the U.S. during this grace period, you end your J-1 status and cannot re-enter the U.S. under J-1 status.
    • If your DS-2019 ends after 12/16/2022, you are continuing your studies and/or are on approved academic training, thus, you will be able to re-enter the U.S. if you have a valid travel signature.
  • Make sure your travel signature is valid.
    • A travel signature is on the front page of your DS-2019. The ARO signature is good for 1 year. If you don't have a signature less than 1 year old, you need a new one!
  • Have fun.
    • This is the simplest advice we're going to give to you, but we hope that you have fun when you're traveling over this winter break.

REMINDERS

Submit On-Campus Employment Requests

If you're working on campus, you must have authorization to do so. Please submit your requests to work on campus in MyISSS and Sharece will process your approval letters within a few weeks.

Secure Your Documents!

Your passport, social security card, and DS-2019 are important documents. Please keep these safe. Requesting replacement documents can be very time consuming and can take the focus away from your studies at very inconvenient times.

Zoolights and Snowflake Lane

To many, Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday season and celebrations. When we asked the ISS staff about their favorite activities to do in or around Seattle in December, Kareen and Leana both talked about zoolights. Here in Seattle, the Woodland Park Zoo hosts Wildlanterns, a bright celebration not too far from UW's campus. Down south in Tacoma, the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium hosts Zoolights. Grab your coat and buy a ticket when you head to this festive winter celebration.
If you're willing to travel east of Seattle a little ways, Jo Anne Marie and Kareen suggest visiting Snowflake Lane in Bellevue, where you are sure to experience the magic of the holiday season.
