Funding for J-1 Exchange Visitors

Funding that includes UW salary
If the University of Washington provides all or part of the Exchange Visitor’s salary, the amount (including any portion of salary paid by the Exchange Visitor’s home-country employer) must equal at least the floor of the UW faculty salary schedule and be commensurate to the Exchange Visitor’s academic rank in the home country.

Funding that does not include UW salary
The University of Washington is not required to provide funding for the J-1 Exchange Visitor. The DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility for J-1 Exchange Visitor Status must show an estimated amount of financial support in U.S. dollars that will be provided to the Exchange Visitor for the effective dates of the appointment. Sources could include a U.S. government agency, an international organization, the Exchange Visitor’s government, the Binational Commission of the Exchange Visitor’s country, the Exchange Visitor’s employer or other organization, or any combination of these sources. The sponsoring UW department must obtain evidence of external funding that includes the Exchange Visitor's name, name of the funding agency, amount and dates of funding. Personal funds may supplement but not substitute for institutional, governmental or agency funding. The UW does not provide visa sponsorship for programs funded solely with personal or family funds. Combined sources of funding should be sufficient to cover expenses:

  • J-1 scholar: $1800 per month
  • J-2 spouse: $1200 per month
  • J-2 child: $600 per month
